The increasing levels of environmental pollution and the introduction of increasingly stringent emissions regulations have also increased the demands for environmentally friendly shipping.
Many ships need be retrofitted, particularly in relation to the emission of soot particles and nitrous oxides.

The industry must follow suit in order to remain competitive with respect to CO₂ budgets and demurrage.
Thanks to the compact and modular design, selective catalytic reduction technology (SCRT) has been ideal for retrofitting almost all engine types and power classes. The SCRT system utilises the first step the CRT effect to reduce soot particles in the diesel particulate filter. In the second step, nitrous oxides are reduced (SCR).
According to a study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), approximately half of the temperature increase in the Arctic is due to soot particles.
Because of the compact design and modular structure, the modified CRT/SCRT system of WhiteTec is suitable for retrofitting nearly all engine types and power classes.

Through a combination of highly efficient diesel particulate filters, pollutant-reducing urea, and our double Y-tube with integrated exhaust booster we are already able to meet the 2022 emission requirements for diesel vehicles.

Since 2010, we have been able to demonstrate this on a Dutch eco-tanker, which has received numerous international awards because of its environmental friendliness.

The values shown above are measured values according to TA-Luft, which refer to a diesel engine with a generator with a capacity of 500 KW. 

SCRT exhaust-cleaning system

SCRT, which stands for SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY, combines both SCR and CRT technologies.

The SCRT technology minimises carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides, and soot particles the exhaust of diesel engines. In the first step, the SCRT system utilises the CRT effect to reduce soot particles in the diesel particulate filter. In the second step, the nitrous oxides are reduced (SCR). For this purpose, a urea solution is added to the exhaust gases. This hydrolyses to form water and ammonia.
The resulting ammonia reduces the nitrous oxides in the exhaust gas to elemental nitrogen.


The catalytic converter system has been in use since 2008. On a business premises in Neuss, the exhaust gases are filtered out of 30 marine diesel engines made by Volvo Penta.

These systems are operated with an engine load of 80 percent at 8,000 h per year. And all of this with extremely low levels of pollutants.

In addition to the technical maturity, the compact design and the low maintenance requirements provide real added value for our customers.
This is accompanied by very short installation times. We usually deliver the entire catalytic converter system ready for operation e.g. on the dock.
